Elizabeth Whitsitt is an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law teaching and researching in international economic law and dispute resolution. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and is appointed to Canada’s roster for The Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) Chapter 10 Binational Panels and a Canadian Member of USMCA’s Joint Public Advisory Committee to Commission for Environmental Cooperation.
Professor Whitsitt received her LLM in International Legal Studies from New York University and her PhD from the University of Calgary. Professor Whitsitt has published and presented extensively in the areas of international trade, investment, and international dispute settlement. She is a former scholar-in-residence at Wilmer Hale LLP and the recipient of a Canada Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowship, Killam Memorial Scholarship and the Marc Lalonde Prize for Excellence in International and Commercial Arbitration. She is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and articled and practiced law as a civil litigator at a national law firm prior to pursuing her graduate degree.
Dispute Resolution Experience and TrainingPrior to moving to academia, Professor Whitsitt practiced as a civil litigator at a national law. She has since written and presented extensively on dispute resolution in the international economic law context and has taught dispute resolution courses. In addition to being qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrations, she has also served as an expert member on the Alberta Law Reform Institute’s Uniform International Commercial Arbitration Act Project Advisory Committee.
Professor Whitsitt is the Chairperson of the University of Calgary’s Mooting Program where she oversees students gaining skills in a diverse array of advocacy settings. She also co-coaches the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Team.
