Professional Experience

Dr. Paul A. Tichauer is an independent commercial arbitrator specializing in the resolution of disputes in the metallurgical,  industrial, materials, manufacturing, engineering and technology sectors.

Prior to becoming a commercial arbitrator, Dr. Tichauer enjoyed a successful C-Suite career with a number of companies providing highly engineered products, processes and services in Canada, the USA and Europe.

Dispute Resolution Experience and Training

Founding Chair of the Canada Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Dr. Tichauer’s arbitral appointments include sitting as Sole Arbitrator with the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC in Paris for a complex multi-party international dispute concerning the failure of an aircraft jet engine, as Sole Arbitrator with ICDR-Canada and as a Public Arbitrator with FINRA – the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in the USA.

In 2022, Dr. Tichauer received the CIArb Canada Award for Distinguished Service in Canadian Arbitration.

Dr. Tichauer is Co-Chair of the annual CanArbWeek conference and currently serves as Vice President of the Standing Committee of ICC’s International Center for ADR in Paris.  In addition, he is a member of ICC Canada’s Arbitration Committee, of the ADR Institute of Canada, of the Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society and is an arbitrator with ICDR Canada.  He was designated by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators as their Observer at the UNCITRAL Commission Working Group lll on Investor-State Dispute Resolution Reform.

​Dr. Tichauer has served as an arbitration tutor with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrator’s Advanced Route to Fellowship programs in Vancouver, New York City and Toronto. He was also co-chair of CIArb Canada’s Annual Arbitration Symposia in Toronto in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Dr. Tichauer has participated as an Arbitrator and a Tribunal Chair at Vis Moot Competitions in Vienna and Hong Kong for six years as well as a Judge at the ICC Mediation Competitions in Paris since 2015. In addition, Dr. Tichauer has spoken about arbitration at the Canadian Conference of Metallurgists and about ICC Dispute Boards and Experts at the DRBF Conference in Washington.

Academic Qualifications

A Rhodes Scholar, Dr. Tichauer has a B. Eng. (Metallurgy) from McGill University, an MA (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) from Oxford University, a PhD (Metallurgy) from MIT and an MBA with Distinction (Finance) from Pace University.

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) since 2013, Dr. Tichauer successfully completed the Diploma Program in International Commercial Arbitration offered by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators at Oxford University as well as both ADR and Advanced ADR training in mediation with Stitt Feld Handy in Toronto.
