Professional Experience

I joined Sullivan & Cromwell LLP in 1987 and became a partner in 1992. My practice as a partner was focused on international commercial litigation in both arbitral and court settings. I was the coordinator of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP’s arbitration practice and served as counsel and arbitrator in numerous arbitral proceedings, including ad hoc proceedings, arbitrations administered under the rules of most international arbitral institutions and arbitrations involving sovereign entities. I also served as counsel in a variety of arbitration-related disputes in court, as well as other commercial litigation and regulatory investigations. I retired from the partnership and full-time work as counsel on December 31, 2021 in order to devote my time to sitting as arbitrator and teaching.

Dispute Resolution Experience and Training

I have served as arbitrator in over 20 cases, including 12 as chair or sole arbitrator, under the ICC, AAA, ICDR, LCIA and UNCITRAL Rules, as well as in other ad hoc arbitrations. I have served as counsel in dozens of arbitrations over 30 years.

Professional and Other Activities

I have served as chair of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration (now serving on the Executive Committee); member of the Board of Directors of the CPR Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution; member of the Board of Directors and Council of the American Arbitration Association; member of the Executive Committee of the New York International Arbitration Center; Chair (and now member) of the International Commercial Disputes Committee of the New York City Bar Association; and Private Sector Advisor on the U.S. delegation to UNCITRAL Working Group on Arbitration.
