Professional Experience

Peter Ruby is a partner in Goodmans’ Dispute Resolution Group. He has a national and international practice focused on the litigation and arbitration of a wide variety of business disputes, including related to technology, energy, corporate, commercial, and restructuring matters.

Dispute Resolution Experience and Training

Peter Ruby acts as a sole and panel-member arbitrator and mediator with a focus on the technology and energy sectors, as well as corporate/commercial domestic and international disputes. He has adjudicated and mediated disputes between a wide variety of contracting parties in these sectors. Bringing together his expertise about energy and technology, he recently acted as a co-arbitrator with respect to a failed green energy project.

His technology dispute resolution work includes software, cloud services, hardware, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, telecommunications, film, television, privacy and data protection, intellectual property, ecommerce and internet litigation, cryptocurrency and Canadian and cross-border arbitration and mediation.  Peter has a balanced practice, representing multinational and entrepreneurial vendors of technology and services, along with many end-users of information technology.

With respect to the energy sector, Peter has handled matters related to electricity generation (including renewable power), transmission, mergers and acquisitions, rates adjudication, access matters, joint venture disputes, leases, real estate development and distribution issues, and regulatory issues.

With respect to privacy and data protection, Peter has handled business-related privacy disputes and regulatory matters and has considerable experience assisting clients with data breach incidents and cybersecurity.

In addition to being a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, he has completed the arbitration “Gold Standard” course of the Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society, spoken at the annual conference of the Western Canada Commercial Arbitration Society and taught for many years at the University of Toronto Law School and Osgoode Hall Law School.
