Professional Experience

Since 2023, I have served as an arbitrator and mediator across BC, Canada and internationally. I served for 10 1/2 years on the Canadian judiciary, including eight years on the Supreme Court of Canada, writing and participating in significant judgments in commercial law, insurance law, private law, energy law, public law, tax law, technology, aboriginal law, criminal law and constitutional law.

I previously served as a trial and appellate judge in Alberta, was professor and associate Dean of Law at the University of Alberta, the chair of the Health Law Institute, and litigation counsel at the Bars of Alberta and British Columbia, practicing in insurance, commercial law, construction/infrastructure, employment, trusts, medical negligence and major casualty.

As a trial judge, I also conducted dozens of judicial dispute resolutions, achieving a high rate of settlement.

Dispute Resolution Experience and Training

I presently serve as sole or co-arbitrator in domestic and international commercial matters involving mining, real estate development, transport, mergers and acquisitions, auditor’s negligence, major casualty/insurance, construction and the sale and regulation of electricity. I am a trained and certified mediator (Pepperdine/Strauss Institute), and have conducted complex commercial mediations in real estate development, oil & gas, forestry, copyright, major casualty/insurance and intellectual property matters. I have also participated as counsel in approximately 50 mediations, including complex cross-border mediations with jurisdictional disputes. I have participated in counsel in approximately 10 domestic arbitrations. As a member of the Canadian judiciary, I wrote over 175 judgments, approximately 100 of them at the Supreme Court of Canada.
